Digital Braille Reader

Date

October 2024 - December 2024

The Digital Braille Reader is an innovative assistive technology device designed to bridge the gap between digital content and visually impaired users. This portable, battery-powered device transforms digital text into tactile braille patterns through six strategically placed vibration generators, allowing users to "read" text through finger-based tactile sensation. The system features Bluetooth connectivity for easy file transfer from smartphones and includes onboard memory for PDF storage. What sets this device apart is its affordability and portability compared to traditional electronic braille displays, which typically cost between $700-$4000. The project combines hardware engineering with software development, utilizing an ESP32-S3 microcontroller, custom Flutter-based mobile application, and an ergonomically designed 3D-printed casing to create a comprehensive solution for digital text accessibility.

    Key Points:

Core Function: Converts digital text to tactile braille patterns using vibration technology
Hardware: Custom-designed with ESP32-S3 board and six vibration generators
Connectivity: Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for smartphone integration
Software: Flutter-based mobile app for iOS and Android
Design: Ergonomic 3D-printed casing for single-handed use
Storage: Onboard memory for PDF files
Accessibility: More affordable alternative to traditional braille displays
Target Users: Visually impaired individuals needing access to digital content
Impact: Enhances digital accessibility while maintaining portability and affordability
